The FAA has approved the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for installation of the Garmin G500H flight display in the Robinson R44 helicopter. Any authorized Garmin dealer can install the G500H in an R44 in accordance with FAA guidelines. In order to accomplish the installation, a separate PMA parts kit will be available for purchase to authorized dealers. This STC will cover all models of the R44 helicopter.

R44 helicopters currently equipped with a 10-hole instrument panel will be able to install the G500H display directly into the instrument panel. R44s equipped with a seven or nine hole instrument panels will be able to replace the instrument panel assembly with a new Garmin-designed assembly included in a PMA'd parts kit.

The G500H is an all-glass avionics system designed specifically for the VFR Part 27 helicopter market. The primary flight display (PFD) shows attitude, airspeed, vertical speed, altitude, and course/heading information. The multi-function display (MFD) has detailed moving map graphics with the helicopters current position in relation to terrain, chart data, navaids, and flight plan routings. The system also offers options like Helicopter Synthetic Vision Technology (HSVT), XM WX weather with US/ Canada NEXRAD radar, worldwide weather plus voice calling and position reporting via Iridium, and the ability to display video from a forward looking infrared (FLIR) camera or video sources.

Southeast Aerospace has been contracted by Auburn University through its Aviation Management/Professional Flight Education Program to develop a complete ADS-B solution including an AML STC.

Through the development of this ADS-B project, SEA plans to support the GA market with an STC with AML approval for a 978MHz UAT solution. This solution is to meet the ADS-B DO-282B certification. The contract will include Engineering, Certification and Installation of the FreeFlight RANGR ADS-B Out system in a Cessna 172S. This project in its entirety, including engineering, will be managed by Southeast Aerospace personnel.

The equipment chosen for this project includes: FreeFlight FDL-978-TX RANGR UAT, TC-987 control head, RF decoder, 1201 GPS/WAAS receiver, two L-band antennas, and a GPS/WAAS antenna. In addition to the equipment, SEA will provide full FAA DAR/DER services. These value added services include detailed documentation such as Electrical & Structural Installation Drawings, Accomplishment Instructions, Wire Routing Diagrams, Instructions for Continued Airworthiness, and Aircraft Flight Manual Supplements. On-site installation of equipment, testing and certification will be completed by SEA during this STC program.

Once this initial ADS-B "Out" project has been completed and STC/AML approval has been received, SEA will be offering an ideal ADS-B installation solution to the public to address the upcoming ADS-B mandate.

The FAA has recently announced that pilots who use the terminal airspace listed here can now receive free traffic and weather information in the cockpit. To receive these services, aircraft must be equipped with an Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) transmitter/receiver or transceiver and a cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI).

The new services include Flight Information Service - Broadcast (FIS-B), which provides pilots and flight crews with a cockpit display of aviation weather and aeronautical information via Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) equipment on 978 MHz. FIS-B is not compatible with 1090ES avionics. FIS-B weather products are for advisory use only.

These new services also include Traffic Information Service - Broadcast (TIS-B), which enhances a pilot's visual acquisition of other traffic on 978 UAT and 1090 MHz Extended Squitter (1090 ES). IS-B is also an advisory service only. Pilots must continue to exercise vigilance to see and avoid other aircraft per Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 91.113b.

The FAA encourages users of TIS-B and FIS-B to report any irregularities observed while using the services.

Garmin's patented voice recognition command feature Telligence™ has been STC approved for the GMA-350. Now pilots can use their voice to control certain aspects of the audio system. This technology works by simply pressing a "push to command button" and stating the selection. Sandel has announced the receipt of an FAA TSO certification for a roll steering software upgrade on their popular SN3500/SN4500 Primary Navigation Displays. This pilot-selectable feature works with the aircraft's autopilot or flight director and compatible GPS/FMS to automatically make smooth, hands-free turns while flying a sequence of GPS waypoints. In addition to waypoints, this updated feature flies holding patterns, GPS approach entries, and other maneuvers not typically supported by standard autopilot modes. The roll steering upgrade does not require rewiring or modification of the existing SN3500/SN4500 installations, but simply a field loading software update. Garmin has released a mandatory service bulletin for the GTN 725/750 Units with Main Software Version 2.00 installed with a synchro heading input.

A GTN 725 or GTN 750 connected to a synchro heading source incorrectly interprets the synchro heading data as aligned to true north rather than magnetic north. This issue results in the following behavior:

The ownship is aligned to a heading that is skewed by the magnetic variation angle; so on the map display, the ownship will appear to be crabbing. Traffic targets and lightning strikes on the map are depicted correctly in relation to the ownship (e.g., traffic at 3 o'clock in relation to the aircraft is shown at 3 o'clock in relation to the ownship icon), but in relation to the underlying geographical features, their placement is skewed by the magnetic variation angle. When the GTN is providing GPS roll steering to the autopilot on heading legs, the aircraft will follow a flight path that is skewed by the magnetic variation angle. Winds are calculated incorrectly.

Note: This issue does not affect the aircraft's primary display of heading.

Honeywell recently announced the new CAS-100B (TPA-100B) TCAS Processor Traffic Computer. The latest addition to the Honeywell TCAS family is available in both 6 MCU & 4 MCU form factors. This product builds on the functionality of the CAS-100A Surveillance Processor by adding RTCA DO-185B (Change 7.1), Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness, and RTCA DO-300 (Hybrid Surveillance) functionality.

CAS-100B functionality meets the requirements for an ACAS II system as defined in RTCA DO-185B. The current ACAS II Capabilities include: Traffic Information, Collision Avoidance, and Active Surveillance.

In addition to standard TCAS functions, the CAS-100B will be software upgradeable to incorporate ADS-B In functionality. These capabilities include: Passive Surveillance, Hybrid Surveillance, ADS-B In Applications, and Functional Growth. ADS-B In growth functions will be implemented through software upgrades to the computer.

A new CAS-100B (4 MCU) system typically consists of: TPA-100B Processor, ANT-81A Antenna, MST-67A Mode S Transponder, and IVA-81D Indicator (plus additional installation kits & accessories).

Upgrade and replacement of existing Honeywell TCAS II Systems are simple. For aircraft equipped with CAS-81A TCAS II systems, the replacement of the CAS-100B is virtually plug-and-play. Aircraft equipped with CAS-67A TCAS II will require minor updates for the upgrade. These updates included the replacement of the mounting tray and connectors, plus the installation of the ANT-81A Directional Antenna(s) in place of the current ANT-67A.

Garmin has announced the discontinuance of the GNS 530W & GPS 500W models due to decreasing demand and limited parts availability. Beginning November 30, 2011, Garmin will no longer be accepting new orders for these units. The current FAA TSO C194 for helicopter terrain awareness only applies to operations above 500 feet AGL. In reality of flight, a great deal of the real world helicopter operations occur below 500 feet.

FreeFlight recently announced that their RANGR FDL-978TX ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) UAT 978MHz transmitter has received TSO-C154c from the FAA.

The RANGR FDL-978TX interfaces to the FreeFlight WAAS-GPS receiver 1201, dual antennas, and panel mount control. This system brings pilots the first V2 compliant TSO-C154c UAT transmitter to comply with the FAA Advisory Circular AC 20-165. It will provide air traffic controllers with course, speed, and altitude data continuously, as well as other ADS-B equipped aircraft. What does "ADS-B Compliant" mean?

There are many companies including distributors and manufacturers touting "ADS-B compliant" products. As Southeast Aerospace has been educating the market, it is very important to understand that ADS-B is an aircraft system consisting of multiple products, integration, and complete aircraft certification to meet DO-260B standards.

DO-260B standards only apply to the current ADS-B Out format of 1090 MHz which is being mandated for Class A Airspace. That is, the 1090 MHz Out or Extended Squitter only applies to aircraft operations above 18,000 feet or FL180.

What does this all mean?

At this point in the ADS-B evolution and implementation, there are no true "ADS-B compliant" products available on the market that meet the United States FAA ADS-B performance standards. Furthermore, a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) is required for each aircraft to be ADS-B certified. An STC project requires detailed engineering, integration, and, in most cases, flight testing.

Avidyne has announced the release of their new product, the AXP340, at the 2011 ALEA convention in New Orleans.

The AXP340 is a panel-mount Class 1 (240 watt), Mode S, Level 2 1090 MHz Datalink Transponder with Extended Squitter (ES) that meets all the requirements for Mode S elementary surveillance for both IFR & VFR flight. Rockwell Collins has announced to discontinue production and support of the AHC-85/-85D/-85E Altitude Heading Computers. The decision is due to obsolescence of key hardware components.

Based on current usage, Rockwell Collins expects to run out of hardware by mid-2012. All repairs are now being done on a parts available basis.

Rockwell Collins has released a TCAS II system with Change 7.1 logic. This software update relates to the resolution advisory thresholds and pilot commands. TCAS II Change 7.1 standard allows either aircraft to issue a Reversal in a TCAS to TCAS resolution advisory event. What We Learned About ADS-B:

No, the 2020 FAA ADS-B mandate only covers ADS-B "Out" for aircraft surveillance. ADS-B In features (traffic and weather) are optional.


As of 2011, there is no standard format for the display of the traffic and weather information that one can receive with a ADS-B receiver such as the 978 MHz UAT. Currently, manufacturers of 978 Mhz UATs and/or 1090 Mhz receivers are maintaining proprietary display formats for the traffic and weather received.


Yes, as of 2011, the FAA is requiring that you obtain a Supplemental Type Certificate for an ADS-B "Out" installation on any aircraft. Several OEMs and engineering companies such as Southeast Aerospace are developing STCs to be processed and eventually approved by the FAA. The FAA has not advised if future ADS-B installations will be possible through FAA STC AML (Approved Model List) although it is a good probability once several STCs have been issued.


The current Air Traffic Control (ATC) surveillance system in the United States is outdated and must be changed. Surveillance through GPS tracking is much more reliable and offers more widespread coverage than the current ground radar system. Therefore, the FAA has mandated that all aircraft must comply with the ADS-B Out mandate by 2020. If you do not comply and/or your aircraft is not capable of providing ADS-B output information, then you cannot fly in U.S. airspace after 2020.

Furthermore, ADS-B Out provides better aircraft tracking and surveillance thus ensuring a higher level of safety for all. For those who obtain and integrate ADS-B In systems into their aircraft, you will enjoy free weather and traffic information services via the ADS-B broadcast stations.


Considering the hundreds of ADS-B stations already installed and in use, years of research & development, and billions of tax dollars spent to implement ADS-B, the FAA has no plans to either change or cancel the ADS-B Out mandate.


No, technically a WAAS GPS is not the only GPS receiver that can be interfaced to a certified ADS-B Out system. Most WAAS GPS receivers provide all of the parameters and meet all of the performance requirements needed for an approved ADS-B Out system. Therefore, due to the popularity and availability of WAAS GPS receivers, most aircraft will be utilizing them in approved ADS-B systems.


If you fly above FL180, you must use a transponder capable of 1090ES (extended squitter) for ADS-B Out. If you fly internationally, you must use 1090ES as well. Therefore, you must continue to use a transponder in these applications. The 978 MHz UAT is only for use below FL180.


No, if you are currently operating an aircraft with one transponder antenna then the existing antenna configuration is acceptable for ADS-B Out compliance. The ADS-B Out mandate does not change any requirements for European Mode S antenna diversity or TCAS II antenna diversity in applicable aircraft.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a component of the Next-Generation (Next Gen) Air Transportation System. ADS-B is an advanced surveillance technology that combines an aircraft's positioning source (GPS), aircraft avionics, and a ground infrastructure to create an accurate surveillance interface between the aircraft & aircraft traffic control. ADS-B provides consistent position accuracy regardless of the aircraft's range from the receiver.

The improved accuracy and update rate of ADS-B is a critical segment of the NextGen infrastructure.

The FAA has determined that it will be necessary for all aircraft operating in specific airspaces to be equipped with ADS-B Out by 2020. A nationwide infrastructure of ground stations is scheduled for completion during 2013.

As of June 2010, only ADS-B Out is being mandated. ADS-B Out provides the ATC with real-time position information. ADS-B In is the aircraft's ability to receive and display other aircraft broadcasted information as well as the services provided by the ground stations.

ADS-B requires the use of a Positioning Source. As of June 2010, any positioning source is allowed; however, WAAS is the only positioning service that provides the equivalent availability required.

A Broadcast Link is also required for ADS-B functionality. There are two available options: 1090 MHz Extended Squitter (ES) or Universal Access Transceiver (UAT). FL 180 (the lower boundary of Class A airspace) is the ceiling for operating an aircraft equipped with UAT only.

ADS-B will eventually provide weather services, air traffic information, terrain maps and other flight information services for all pilots through satellite based data and ground stations. In accordance with NextGen, ADS-B will provide benefits that address some shortcomings over other, existing surveillance systems.

Some of these benefits include:

• Air-to-air surveillance capability
• Surveillance in remote areas where radar coverage is unavailable
• Real-time traffic information for aircraft not equipped with active traffic systems (ex. TCAS, TAS)
• Reduced separation between aircraft due to sharing of flight information between aircraft
• Better predictability in departure and arrival times

Ultimately, ADS-B will allow aircraft to fly at safe distances from each another.


The word "squitter" refers to a random broadcast of data occurring usually in the absence of interrogation. As a component of the ADS-B system in the USA, Extended Squitter refers to a burst of extended data or message broadcasted on 1090 MHz. When connected to a GPS with the necessary integrity, a Mode S transponder with Extended Squitter capability will send a message providing position, velocity, and time.

Honeywell recently announced the collaboration with Aspen Avionics to deliver the KSN 770 to market before the end of 2011. The KSN 770 is a state-of-the-art, NextGen ready multi-function touchscreen cockpit display for general aviation. The two companies have developed an agreement to bring Honeywell's open-interface KSN 770 to market. The KSN 770 is part of the Apex Edge series, delivering MFD with GPS, Com and Nav capabilities for general aviation, Part 23 aircraft. Featuring a 5.7"touchscreen and a leading-edge graphic interface, the product is designed to integrate with future cockpit investments. The KSN 770 also interfaces with more than 90% of the general aviation aircraft in today's market. Designed to make flying safer and easier, the KNS 770 will have Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) and WAAS capabilities. It will also display safety systems including onboard weather radar, EGPWS, data link weather, traffic, and charts and maps. Garmin has just announced the release of the certified and approved GTN 650 & 750 series "next generation" touchscreen avionics. The newly released GTN series are touchscreen GPS/NAV/COM panel mount units with multi-function display capabilities. Both the GTN 650 & 750 include the following features: intuitive touchscreen operation, graphical flight planning, victor airway and high-altitude jet route navigation, remote transponder, SafeTaxi® and more. The GTN 750 series also has remote audio control and electronic chart capabilities. The GTN series is designed to be intuitive with a simple user interface. Both units feature a shallow menu structure, simple menu interface with intuitive icons, audio and visual feedback, and animation to show system response. To facilitate ease of use and hand stabilization, the units have been designed with a finger anchoring bezel around the sides of the display. For traditional data entry via buttons and knobs, the GTN systems have a dual concentric knob for basic operations. A significant difference of the GTN series in comparison to the previous GNS series is screen size. The GTN 650 has the same exterior footprint as the GNS 430W, but has a 4.9" screen that has 53% more screen area than the GNS 430W. The GTN 750 series' large 6.9" screen has 98% more screen area than the GNS 530W, making it possible to view an entire chart. In addition, both units have an enhanced, higher resolution picture that is over 5 x more pixels than the GNS 430W / 530W respectively. In addition to significant screen design improvements, the GTN series also offers easy flight planning, enhanced situational awareness, and added weather & traffic features. The GTN series has been designed with wide compatibility with Garmin avionics and sensors, making it possible to have an intuitive interface with other systems. For audio and intercom features, Garmin's new GMA 35 remote mount audio processor (optional) interfaces with the GTN 750 series. The Garmin GTX 32/33/33D remote transponders (optional) also interface with the GTN 650/750 series. The GTN series is effectively a replacement for the GNS series of avionics. However, Garmin will still continue to sell and support the GNS units while available. The GTN 650 series has relatively the same footprint as the GNS 430 series, but is not a drop in replacement. The GTN 750 series is 1.4" taller than the GNS 530 series, however compensating with optional remote audio and transponder capabilities. Later this year, Garmin will make available the GTN 625/725 series (GPS only versions of the GTN 650/750) and the GTN 635 series (a GPS/COM version of the GTN 650). The GTN 650/750 series has received FAA TSO authorization in March and are STC approved on a board approved model list covering most Part 23 fixed wing aircraft. The units are available for shipping immediately. The GTN 625, 635 and 725 models are expected to become available the 3rd quarter 2011. Garmin has released Software Service Bulletin SSB 1110 Rev A and SSB 1102 Rev B in reference to the availability of software upgrades for the G500/G600 systems respectively. These SSB announces the availability of GDU 620 Software Version 5.00, GRS 77 AHRS Software Version 3.00, GDC 74 Software Version 3.06, and GAD 43 Software Version 2.01 for use with the G500/G600 systems. This software upgrade is Mandatory for installations affected by Service Advisory 1027. SA 1027 effects any G500/G600 system installation in an aircraft that requires a maximum airspeed indicator ("barber pole") that will change based on altitude. The GDU 620 pervious software version 3.02 does not provided the required barber pole. The upgrades are recommended for all installations.

Installations effected by Service Advisory 1027 will be warranty reimbursed for the manpower (1 hour labor), with a deadline of March 31, 2012. All unaffected aircraft installations are at the customers' discretion and will not be reimbursed. ISO Category 8 Clean Room

At the beginning of the year, Southeast Aerospace completed renovations to our facility to include an ISO Category 8 Clean Room. The newly added SEA clean room houses a modern instrument repair facility designed to control contamination in accordance with the ISO Category 8 specifications. This clean room atmosphere will allow SEA to expand our current instrument MRO capabilities. SEA currently has complete in-house capabilities for air data, and gyro based disassembly and overhaul, with plans to expand.

Part 21 Quality System

Southeast Aerospace has undertaken the task of implementing a Part 21 conforming quality system for our FAA Approved Manufacturing department. SEA's recently expanded manufacturing department is dedicated to avionics kit production. Part 21 Quality System certification procedures insure that all SEA manufactured products conform to approved design and are in a condition for safe operation. These procedures include controls for data, documentation, suppliers, manufacturing, inspection and testing.

Increased Engineering Capabilities

The SEA Engineering Department employs multiple FAA DER and design personnel with extensive experience on Part 23, 25, 27 and 29 aircraft. In addition to growing personnel, SEA has recently received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for Airbus A318/A319/A320/A321 series aircraft, STC ST02084SE.

Today's Air Traffic Control Radar Systems
The amount of airline passengers is expected to increase to 1 billion by 2021. The FAA air traffic control (ATC) system has not been significantly updated for nearly 30 years. Many flight delays and cancellations can be attributed to the current air traffic control system. These difficulties cost the airlines millions of dollars in lost revenue and can make the airline travel experience very unpleasant. The Next Generation air traffic control system (or NextGen) greatly improves how aircraft are tracked. Instead of relying on original ground-based radar systems, NextGen will utilize GPS technology called ADS-B (automatic dependant surveillance broadcast). The current radar tracking system means that aircraft must fly non-linear routes to stay in radar areas. With ADS-B, aircraft can fly straighter, shorter routes. Airlines can save on fuel while passengers save on travel time. This could eventually mean lower airfares.
	The cost to implement ADS-B is estimated at $22 billion. The logistics for its implementation are complex and there are many critics of the plan. However, it is difficult to ignore the ultimate benefits: NextGen ADS-B = Straighter air routes = Shorter flights = Fuel savings + More flights available

Garmin Announces New Audio Panels - GMA-350/350H
	Garmin announces new audio panels, GMA-350/350H with voice recognition, 3D spatial audio processing and advanced auto squelch features. Both new panels are high-fidelity audio products with advanced circuitry.
A few of the industry leading features include: Voiced Based commands that can be used to control most aspects of the panel that would normally be done with a button or knob. A new "Blue-select" feature makes entertainment audio distribution independent. With the addition of another toggle key, the passenger can toggle their own intercom with the pilot to eliminate should tapping the pilot for attention. The GMA-350H has the same core features as the -350, with the addition of 3 COM support, night vision Class B compatible green annunciation & backlighting, and new Split-Com modes. New panel available in April. GMA-350H List Price: $2700 The GMA-350/350H is expected to supersede the GMA-347/347H audio panels respectively. The GMA-347 series will be discontinued over the next 3 months.

Garmin Announces G500H STC for Robinson R44 Helicopters Garmin announced their work to obtain a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for installation of the G500H glass cockpit in the Robinson R44 Helicopter. R44s that are currently equipped with a 10-hole instrument panel will be able to directly upgrade to the G500H. R44s with 7 or 9-hole instrument panels will be able to install the G500H with the addition of the separate PMA parts kit. The G500H is an all glass avionics system designed specifically for the VFR Part 27 helicopter market. R44 with G500H at Heli-Expo was field approved. Garmin is anticipating receipt of the STC in the 4th Quarter of 2011. Gamin Announces Portable SafeNav
	Garmin also announced the availability of a stand-alone GPS based system, designed to help support Airport Ground Support Equipment (GSE) avoid accidental runway incidents. The system is set up to assist more than 950 US Airports Garmin partnered with I.D. System, Inc (IDSY), a leader in the asset management industry to distribute and market SafeNav powered by Garmin. SafeNav used Garmin's SafeTaxi database and provides visual and audible alarms to prevent inadvertent runway incursions.

Garmin has just announced that repairs of the MX20 with display-related faults will be limited. The display repairs will be available on a first come, first serve basis. As of December 31, 2011, all MX20 repairs will discontinue. The GMX200 has replaced the MX20 in the Garmin MFD product line. Garmin is offering trade-in rebates for normal condition MX20s. Please note that the GMX200 is not a direct replacement for the MX20 and will require a new installation.
