What is the purpose of a heading bug on your HSI. What does the pilot use it for?

The heading bug provides a means to remind the pilot of the chosen or desired heading. The bug is also connected to an internal synchro which outputs an error signal to the autopilot when the heading bug is offset from the lubber line.
