The owner of a PLB or ELT must register the beacon with the national authorities who will supply the necessary registration form. The beacon is programmed with a unique 15 digit hexadecimal identity number (ID). In addition, most PLBs and ELTs are coded in compliance with COSPAS-SARSAT serialized protocol. For marine and land use, the serialized protocol is utilized.
