At this time, the Garmin 400W/500W series WAAS units are approved for interface to the following EFIS systems:

Honeywell EFIS 40/50 with the SG 465 symbol generator with the following limitation: No vertical guidance is provided for GPS approaches.

Sandel SN3308 with the following limitation: GPS lateral and vertical guidance is provided using the analog interface.

Sandel SN3500 with the following limitation: Vertical guidance is provided for GPS approaches.

This is specified in the latest Garmin 400W series installation manual P/N 190-00356-02 Rev. C, dated April 2007.
Many avionics systems require a configuration or setup process. This process is required to interface certain avionics systems to other systems in the aircraft that will be inputting or outputting information to and from these systems. Some examples of systems that require a configuration or setup process include:

Autopilot
EFIS
GPS
EGPWS
EHSI
RADAR
TAWS
TCAS


In addition, most newer technology or solid state systems require configuration via computer interface of some type. A qualified avionics technician should always refer to the appropriate manufacturer's installation manual for complete information and instructions.

Yes, Sandel has recently released a service bulletin addressing this issue. The problem has been traced to improper manufacturing tolerances used in the installation of a plastic polarizer in optical system, which does not meet published specifications. Sandel has stated that this problem does not present a flight safety concern and that it is only a cosmetic defect. This service bulletin applies to all serial numbers, shipped prior to August 24, 2009.

A glass polarizer has been designed as a replacement that does not the present the discoloration problem. This part can be retrofitted by the factory into any LED backlit unit.

Identical service bulletins on this problem have also been issued for the SA4550, SN4500 and the SN3500.

Similar to other manufacturers, the ordering or catalog part number is different than the part number actually printed on the physical unit. Sandel uses a numbering scheme for ordering new systems that begins with 5 numbers (ex. 90131). However, this part number is not on the actual dataplate of the unit. The part number on the unit will usually be similar to the model number with numbers following it (ex. ST3400-000).
Yes, an LED upgrade is available for the Sandel SN3500 EHSI.

Certain original production units of the SN3500 do not include the LED backlight. The upgrade incorporates an LED backlight with 10,000 hour minimum MTBF. Sandel offers the LED upgrade for various prices. $1500 if the unit is under warranty and $2000 if it is not under warranty. Units with serial number format of 5-XXXX were manufactured with the LED already incorporated.
Sandel has introduced Reversionary Attitude for the SN3500 and SN4500 Primary Navigation Displays. With this new safety feature, you can call up an attitude display on the SN3500/SN4500 at the flip of a switch while retaining heading and navigational information. Attitude information is provided by Sandel's solid-state SG120 AHRS.

The Reversionary Attitude feature is now available for the SN3500 and SN4500. Upgrade requires a Sandel SG102 or other suitable AHRS. SN3500 units with serial number below 2000 will require an upgrade to LED backlighting.
