Many operators of the KFM-985 only utilized the 138-174 MHz frequency ranges. Therefore, if only these frequencies are desired, then Southeast Aerospace recommends the TFM-138B from Technisonic. If the dual bands of 138-174 and 403-512 MHz are desired, then Southeast Aerospace recommends the TFM-500 from Technisonic.

Guard is a term used to describe a special option on tactical radios. This special option is a dual monitoring system that continually monitors emergency channels (either a preset or selected channel, depending on unit options) for broadcasts, while still receiving on the main receiver. The radio will annunciate a notice when there is a broadcast on the emergency channel. Annunciation type depends on the particular unit and set up options.

This feature is particularly useful for search and rescue mission aircraft.
