BendixKing - Panel Mount Nav System
Part Number :

KNS-81
FEATURES
  • Panel mounted navigation system consisting of VOR/Localizer receiver, RNAV computer, and glideslope receiver (basic model)
  • Similar to KNS-80 navigation system but DOES NOT include DME section
  • Models available WITHOUT glideslope receiver (see table below)
  • Models available with Special subdued pushbutton lighting where standard button lighting could provide a distraction problem (see table below)
  • Models available with shiny lens for high mounting angles or pedestal mount installations or non-glare lens for conventional installations (see table below)
  • Models available with optional communcations bus from the KNS-81 to the KGR-356 Radar Graphics system which provides visual indication of the waypoints in relation to the weather and the VORTAC (see table below)
  • Models availables with black or grey bezel (see table below)
  • Models available will communication option which interfaces the KNS-81 with the KTU-709 TACAN allowing the KNS-81 to accept TACAN information. VOR.PAR mode is not available on TACAN units. The PAR nomenclature on the display is replaced with TAC nomenclature (See table below)
  • Models available with front panel with RFI shield (see table below)
  • Models available with helicopter option designed to provide increased immunity to rotor modulation interference (see table below)
  • Models available with 9 or 10 waypoint data storage (see table below)
  • Simultaneously displays waypoint parameters of frequency, radial and distance plus up to ten waypoints (TACAN version will also tune TACAN receiver and display TACAN channels & receiving radial information)
  • 200-channel VOR/LOC receiver
  • Digital RNAV computer with capability for preselection and storage of 4 VOR/LOC frequencies and/or complete RNAV waypoints
  • 40-channel Glideslope receiver (optional, see table below)
  • Provide OBI outputs for driving an RMI indicator such as KI-229 or KNI-582
  • Will operate on any voltage from 11 to 33 volts
  • Large Scale Integrated (LSI) circuits used which results in complete unit weighing only 5 lbs. with a low power consumption of 15 watts
  • Automatic dimming circuit for display compensates for changes in ambient light level
  • Can be interfaced to KN-63, KDM-706 DME units and KTU-709 TACAN
  • Commonly used with KI-202 VOR indicator or KI-206 VOR/GS indicator but can be used with KNI-510/510/510B/520/525 or KPI-550A/551A/552/553/553A Navigation indicators, KI-525/525A HSI units, KDI-572/573/574 DME indicators

Neither the KNS-80 or KNS-81 Nav Systems contain FM immunity. Likewise, there are no modifications or service bulletins that can be incorporated to achieve FM immunity. However, the KNS-81 can be used in conjunction with KA-155 FM filter to achieve FM immunity. KNS-81 units must have Mod 14 to be compatible with the KA-155. KNS-81 units above serial number 8309 already have this mod incorporated. According to Revision 4 of the KA-155 installation manual, the KNS-80 can be used with the KA-155 filter as well.

Southeast Aerospace exchanges are based on the return of an undamaged, economically repairable core unit with identical part number as the unit shipped to the customer. An "economically repairable" core is defined as one where the cost to repair/overhaul (or Repair Cap) does not exceed 80% of the original SV/OH exchange price billed. Should the Repair Cap exceed 80%, the customer will be billed the additional amount. In the event this amount exceeds the Outright Price for the unit, the customer would only be billed the difference between the Outright Price and SV/OH Exchange Price with the core returned as-is to the customer.

Here is an example of such a transaction:

$1000 Exchange Price charged to customer
$1000 x .8 = $800 Maximum Allowable core repair charge or Repair Cap

$2000 Cost to repair core unit
- $800 Less Core repair cap
---------
$1200 Additional billing amount.

2200.00 Total Cost of transaction

Please Note:
SEA offers exchange on new items as well. However, repair cap as indicated above is still based on SV/OH exchange price.

Negotiating the exchange price of a unit only limits the allowable repair cap for the core unit. Southeast Aerospace's exchange transactions are based on the return of economically repairable core unit. Once the core is received and evaluated, the core repair cost incurred by SEA cannot exceed 80% of the original exchange price. That is, it cannot cost SEA more than 80% of the original OH/SV exchange price collected from the customer. Therefore, when and if an SEA exchange price is discounted, there is a risk that additional charges may be assessed once the core is returned and evaluated.

For more information, please refer to these other Exchange FAQs

The KNS-81 meets TSO C40a (VOR), C36c (LOC), and C34c (Glideslope). The KNS-80 does not meet any TSOs. The VOR/LOC/GS section of the KNS-80 is very similar to that of the KNS-81. The KNS-80 also include integrated DME. The DME section of the KNS-80 is similar to that of a stand-alone KN-64 DME. The KN-64 is not a TSOd DME. Therefore, with the inclusion of the Non-TSO DME, the KNS-80 is not TSOd overall.

It should be noted that although the KNS-80 is not TSOd, it does meet the Area Navigation System specification as per FAA Advisory Circular 90-45A

Although the specific KNS-80 and KNS-81 installation manuals only specify certain King indicators as compatible, there are many different indicators that can be used with these navigation systems. The King installation manuals indicate the following nav indicators as compatible:

KI-206
KNI-520
KPI-552
KPI-553

(note: the manual does list some much older indicators as well which are obsolete and unsupportable)

In addition, the following indicators will interface and provide the necessary functions for VOR/LOC/GS navigation:

KI-202   (VOR/LOC only)
IND-350   (VOR/LOC only)
IND-350A   (VOR/LOC only)
IND-351
IND-351A
IND-351D

More or less, any "non-converter" indicator should function properly with the KNS-80 and KNS-81. Please note that it is ultimately the responsibility of the installer to verify system performance, functionality, and airworthiness.
